Set atop a hill overlooking Maquoit Bay, the dual nature of this barn has its roots in the past and its view towards the future. The barn presents a traditional face to the main road. An appearance that would not be out of place when these fields were worked 200 years earlier. However, when viewed from the fields or the water, the barn’s dual nature becomes clear as cedar shingles are traded for glass.
Our architect’s design enclosed the entire east gable in glass. A glazed timber curtainwall was selected to visually coordinate with the barn’s primary timber frame structure. The resulting transparency provides striking views from both within and without. During the day the internal spaces are filled with natural light and in the evening the timber structure and wood surfaces are on display as the barn becomes a glowing lantern hovering over the field.
A ‘sea’ through view to ocean was created with traditional exterior sliding barn doors combined with interior large glass pocket doors on both gables. The beautiful hand cut Douglas-fir timber frame set the stage for curating the building’s material and colors selections, seamlessly blending tradition and modern design.
Conceived of as the first phase of a new home project, the barn contains gathering spaces for entertaining guests as well as a kitchenette, art studio, office, two bedrooms, and bathrooms.
