Renovating a barn into living space can be a challenging but rewarding project. The good structural condition and size of this barn were important factors in deciding to renovate rather than build new. Reconfiguring the interior layout created functional and beautiful light filled spaces.

We added new windows, doors, interior walls insulation and utility services to the barn. Many of the details and finishes selected by the owners were inspired by the Scandinavian style of buildings already on the property. The curved exterior rafter details were carried throughout the new space including the newel posts, fireplace mantel and painted trim along the fireplace tile.

The front facing glass doors and windows fill the space with natural light and provide a connection to the landscape outside. A suspended constellation of opalescent globes provide illumination in the evening.

The existing exposed structural ‘trees’ became features of the central living space. Their pale blue color extends to the wainscot and railing. A patterned tile ‘chimney’ is the focal point throughout both levels of the newly completed space. With careful planning by our architects and attention to detail from our craftsmen, this project was reminiscent of our early days in barn restorations.
