FAQs
What sets you apart from other Maine builders?
Our expertise in all aspects of timber-frame construction, combined with our turnkey design-build service is unique in Maine.
Do you build timber-frame structures exclusively?
No. While our roots are in timber-framing, we design and build whatever type of structure a client specifies, including conventionally-framed and hybrid homes, barns and other buildings.
What is the difference between a timber-frame building and post-and-beam?
Post-and-beam is a general term that refers to a framework of vertical posts and horizontal beams. A post-and-beam building is also timber-framed if wood joinery is used, but it can also be made with steel plates.
How long does an HBJL construction project typically take?
Once the design is approved it takes six to 12 months, depending on the size, location, weather, and overall complexity.
How do you charge for design services?
Our design work is billed by the hour.
How energy-efficient are your homes?
We will use the most energy-efficient resources available within your budget.
What is your cost per square foot?
There is no simple answer—it depends on the materials selected, the complexity of the design, and the finishes a client chooses. Click here to read more.
Do you sell timber frame kits?
All our timber frames are uniquely designed and hand crafted in our Freeport shop. We do not sell timber frame kits.
Do you do restoration work?
We work on select restoration and renovation projects. But primarily, we build new homes and barns.
Do you sell your plans?
We do not sell plans. Everything we build is from original designs, created to the custom-specifications of our clients.
When I drive by your shop on I-295 I see large frames in your yard. Are they for sale?
Yes. Every year we build display frames and sell them after they’ve weathered nine to 12 months. The price is usually less than a new timber frame, and we sell them on a first come, first served basis. If you would like to add your name to a list, we’ll notify you when one of these frames becomes available.
Do you dismantle barns and sell reclaimed timbers?
We do not dismantle barns, purchase, store, or sell reclaimed timbers.
