Maine Timber Frame Entertainment Barn

Located on a multi-generational family compound along the coast of Maine, this custom timber frame barn creates a place for family and friends to gather, play, and make memories. The owners wanted a versatile space they could enjoy together for years to come. They chose an authentic timber frame for its timeless character, enduring craftsmanship.

At the center of the barn, a full-size pickleball court reflects the family’s shared passion for the sport. The large open space also supports a variety of activities. Multi-sport flooring, a portable net, and a basketball hoop allow the family to easily change the space for different games. A golf simulator beneath the mezzanine adds another year-round entertainment option. Meanwhile, a programmable lighting system creates different settings for everything from active play to evening gatherings.

A Timber Frame Barn Designed for Gathering

Two large mezzanines overlook the central court and add even more space for entertaining. The larger mezzanine features a kitchen with bar seating and standing tables. It also includes an area for video games and Skee-Ball. This elevated space gives guests a comfortable place to gather while still staying connected to the activity below.

Across the barn, the second mezzanine offers a more relaxed setting. Large windows frame views of the bay and fill the sitting area with natural light. A retractable projection screen transforms the space for movie nights and other family events.

Craftsmanship Meets Contemporary Design

A steel catwalk connects the two mezzanines and runs alongside the pickleball court. Our architect designed the welded steel hangers to integrate directly with the timber frame while also providing lateral bracing. The design deliberately contrasts the slender steel with the substantial timbers. Open bar grating keeps the catwalk visually light, while a custom steel railing completes the look.

A dramatic helical wood stair rises from the sitting area to the third-level loft. As it climbs, the stair opens views across the timber frame and down to the court below. At the top, the loft provides a comfortable lounge and spectacular views toward the water.

This coastal Maine timber frame barn demonstrates how traditional timber framing can support a thoroughly modern lifestyle. The design combines authentic timber frame craftsmanship with steel, glass, technology, and flexible recreational spaces.

Most importantly, the barn reflects the people who will use it. Every space serves a purpose, from the pickleball court and golf simulator to the kitchen, mezzanines, and comfortable livings spaces with spectacular ocean views. Together, these elements create a one-of-a-kind custom barn designed to bring generations of family together for years to come.
