Custom Maine Island Cottage
This picturesque Maine cottage is located on a craggy and sparsely populated island 23 miles off the Maine coast. Designed and built as a place of respite for busy mainlanders, it offers solitude and unspoiled views of the open ocean. With this project, we used creativity to overcome the challenges of working in such a remote location. To save time, the entire roof frame was fully cut in our Freeport workshop, and all the wood sheathing was painted in advance. Our Houses & Barns crew then transported everything to the island by boat or barge for construction.
The focal point of the timber accented cottage is its expansive front porch, which sits just 75 feet back from the shoreline. It is a popular spot for afternoon barbecues and sunset cocktails. Above the porch, the master bedroom overlooks the changing sea. Downstairs, an open design creates the perfect setting for social gatherings while a partially enclosed reading nook apart from the main living area offers quiet retreat.
