Pigs and Other Things on Penobscot BayMay 17, 2010
Building a timber frame barn on an island is more difficult than working on the mainland, especially in the winter months. There are many logistical details that present themselves which need to be solved so that time and money are not wasted. When the weather is not cooperating, transportation of materials and meeting ferry schedules can be harrowing. Over the years Houses and Barns by John Libby has developed a specialty for these challenges. It is rewarding to see consistent progress being made even when circumstances are out of our control. A day for a timber framer working on an island away from home and family can be long. As the building progresses with the siding and windows installed, the doors being completed in our shop and other exterior and interior details attended to, the activity on the farm increases. Now that spring is here, pigs and other animals are starting to arrive and the first crop of lettuce has been harvested. It will be great to see the farm in full action as summer approaches and taste the first sample of cheese from the new creamery. |
