Penobscot Bay Island Barn Project
January 15, 2010

It’s been a busy winter for Houses and Barns by John Libby. In December we began the timber frame fabrication of a 3,200 square foot barn with attached shed that will be raised at a site situated on an island in Penobscot Bay. The young salt water farm on which the barn is being built is Certified Organic for MOFGA and will be used for livestock. There will also be a shop for woodworking, a root cellar for storing winter produce and a hay loft. The slab, foundation and stone veneer were completed by the beginning of January, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our subcontractors… Brrrr!  As with all jobs that are timber frame intensive, we lay the frame out in our shop after it has been mortised. Our crew has over 20 years of experience with fabricating and raising timber frames and they make sure that every piece fits. The timber frame members will be transported by truck and raised on site. The actual raising will take place in the next couple of weeks. Here are some pictures of our crew hard at work.
