Cumberland Horse Barn Progress
December 7, 2009

I hope everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving!  We are making great progress on the construction of the 36’ x 48’horse barn in Cumberland, Maine.  As you can see by the photos, the timbers are up and the pine sheathing has been installed, ready for siding.

The roof of the barn is framed using rough sawn Eastern White pine 6 x 8 rafters.  8 x 10 queen posts have been placed on either side of the center aisle.  8 x 8 tie beams and connectors stabilize the center aisle posts with 4 x 6 diagonal knee braces and 6 x 8 common rafters.  The midway rafters are supported on each side by a single full length 48’ foot Douglass Fir 10 x 12  principle purlin and the base of the rafters rest on the 2 x 6 conventionally framed exterior walls.

The exterior trim of the barn will consist of rakes, eaves and returns that will be fabricated, milled, assembled and installed with pre-painted trim to match the traditional appearance of the building.  The trim members will be back-primed and finished with one coat of paint before we install it.  The trim will be supported by rugged, pre-built “ladder sections” that will extend the roof out over the barn by 8 inches.

This project will be wrapping up before the end of the year, but we are still very busy with a barn project on North Haven Island.  Details to come as we make way!
